Nefertiti led me to rediscover Cleopatra. Can you say Cleopatra in your head without adding "Queen of the Nile"? I can't, and I can't say her name without seeing kohl lined eyes, arm bands, and a powerful woman, all in deep dark greens, reds, blues, and yellows. These Cleopatra goddesses are laying on my desk right now, but they aren't lounging. . .they're calling me to pick them up again. The etched ivory is soft and ancient looking, while the unetched green skirt of the larger Cleopatra is shiny and full of depth. And the etching cream I used to help create the "ancient" feel is fairly ancient itself. I bought it about ten years ago, put it away in yet another stash of gotta-have-it-used-it-once-can't afford-to-just-throw-it-away craft supplies, and decided to give it a try instead of running to town to buy more. Enough chitchat, her royal highness is ready for her closeup! 8-31-06 All hail, another queen arrives! Yep, gotta another Cleopatra!

The royal beauty of ancient Egypt has mesmerized me. Search Nefertiti on the web, and you'll likely come up with the picture of the bust of this regal woman's haughty head and elegant shoulders. I've been flitting from one goddess to the next since I finally read The DaVinci Code last month, searching for connections to the past, the mystical, the feminine. There are so many things to choose, but Nefertiti has my attention now. (Cleopatra is calling my name, too.) These are my first attempts at capturing her in glass. All that time at the torch to melt this much glass, a tempermental oxygen concentrator, and my innate impatience led to these ladies with their boiled spots and reduced colors. I couldn't throw them away, though, because even an imperfect Nefertiti imparts an aura of secret knowledge of the ways of the world. Say hello to the ladies and their protective Eye of Horus:
