Breast Cancer Awareness

This year it is estimated that nearly 200,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and more than 40,000 will die. Breast cancer is not exclusively a disease of women, however. Approximately 1,700 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 450 will die each year. The evaluation of men with breast masses is similar to that in women, including mammography. 10% of the proceeds from this sale will go to the Susan B Kommen Foundation. 70% of the proceeds from this sale will go to our local Women's Breast Imaging Center to help pay for mamograms for women with no funding. This freeform focal is made from out of production Bullseye glass, silver dichroic glass, and an embedded pink CZ. The focals length is 41mm, 22mm at its widest point, and 20mm thick. It was wound on a 3/32 mandrel and the hole is clean.

Black Sand Cove

I was inspired by these wonderful raku lampwork beads by Dawn Scannell. They seem to be perfectly complimented by the hand forged oxidized sterling components I pulled from my stash. I love it when a design comes together!

The big beads have soft and feminin shapes and I have combined them with spacers of handpulled yellow, which strike from creamy to red tones.

Butterfly Garden in Midlife

When I was a child, I loved to draw butterflies. Some things we leave behind as we grow, though, and butterflies were one of the things I left behind. Sometimes, because we have left them behind, we think they were meant only for childhood. We see them here, see them there, give a slight nod of acknowledgment, and go on our merry grownup way. Butterflies. Now that midlife is staring me in the face, butterflies once again seem welcome symbols of metamorphosis instead of just cutesy doodles on teenybopper notebooks. Butterflies. Hmmm, maybe this midlife acquired layer of cushioning could be looked upon as my cocoon, and the butterfly waiting to emerge will slowly unfurl tiny tips of wings each year as the me of midlife is ready to emerge. . .well, you never know what is going to inspire you, do you? This Butterfly Garden was torched/sculpted, annealed, cleaned, and put together by me in my southern Illinois studio, where glass melting lures me away from the treadmill and walks, where a sweet tooth usually tempts me between torching sculptures...well, ya know, I had to be honest about it!
