beads and Pendants of Polymer clay. I've been claying for over 7 years. I've had a few articles published in Polymer Cafe Magazine. I usually sand my beads through 7 grits (600-2500), buff and dip in Future which is then heat set. Most beads are sanded in the tumbler but larger ones, ones that need special treatment and ones I am impatient to finish are sanded by hand.

I'm not that fond of or very good at canework so there won't be much here. Canework usually requires patience, something I don't have. I rush my canes, resulting in distortion and other odd things. What ends up here are the few examples of my canework that I'm proud of. Updated: 1-14-08

I just got Grant Diffendaffer's book and once I got over the information overload, I had fun playing with the textured beads.

I made the cane from her article in Polymer Cafe Magazine and used her website to puzzle out how to manipulate the cane to make the pendants. Then I realized I needed beads to match the pendants.
A single cane, stretched, shaped and combined in different ways was used to make everything.

Lots of work and some techniques I'm not accustomed to using but they turned out very well. As usual, tho, they don't compare to the inspiration.

They don't compare to my inspiration but they were a lot of work and I'm very proud of them.
Thin sheets of blends are cut and pieced together into new sheets. These sheets are either formed over scrap clay or left flat and shapes cut from the. They're cured and then the gaps between pieces are back filled with black clay. They're cured again. Next the excess black is sanded off.

I've been obsessed with this technique ever since I got her DVD. Mine aren't as neat and precise as hers but I still love them.

A single color of metallic clay. The mica particles within the clay are first aligned and then manipulated to create the illusions of depth and/or movement. These beads are smooth to the touch.

I saw this technique on several French polymer clay blogs and finally found a tutorial for it. And promptly thought "Why didn't I think of that?" upon seeing how it was done. It produces some very interesting cool effects.

These beads were created after studying tons of pics of raku stringer lampwork beads.
This is sort of canework. I layered the blends offseting them slightly. When I had a thick enough stack I took slices of it and placed them on black base beads. For some, I took a section of the stack and rolled it up like a jellyroll and took my slices from that.

Another technique from Grant Diffendaffer's book.
I think I understand the concept. I think I’m getting the concept to work. I think that the concept is to not understand what I’m doing but to just do it.

Now this is a style I think I can love. Not sure why but it calls to me. Just need to find gears and other fun things to add.

I've always been intriqued by masks, particularily Venetian and Mardi Gras masks. I've been watching a lot of Cirque du Soleil lately and the makeup/masks/costumes are incredibly inspiring. I'm actually pondering trying to become a mask/prop designer for them.
These mini masks can be used as pendants or hung on a wall or placed in a shadow box.
They are made from 100% polymer clay except for the hanging rings (which are imbedded firmly in the clay) and sometimes hidden armatures (like the wire that's inside the horn for strength). Future masks may have feathers (I'm trying to figure ut how to imbed them without them melting in the oven) or other embellishments but the bases will always be pure clay.
