Imagine this: Forty year old cynic waiting in line for the safari ride. Instead of complaining about the wait, she's hoping the line slows down. She wants more time to look at all the masks and carvings and extra little embellishments that Walt's folks have "thrown together" in a way that seems completely appropriate, like what you imagine a real safari outpost might look like. The kids, hubby, and friends were anxious to get on the safari jeep and see the animals. . . and I was secretly wishing for a torch and glass so I could make a mask! The Safari was spectacular, though! Here's what I've gotten to do so far.

Tribal Hunt Mask
A little bit animal, a little bit human. Totally tribal. Inspired by the thoughts of a horned mask looking down at me as I waited in line.

Tribal Hunt Mask-- side
I picked out some browns and reds, then I started randomly winding them onto the glob of glass after it got big enough to be a good base for the mask. I love how some of the Moretti dark reds and chestnuts have a streaky quality.

Tribal Hunt Mask-- turning from side to back
Those colors disappear into each other when molten, though, so I really had no idea how it would look when I put it into the kiln.

Tribal Hunt Mask-- back
When I finally got to sit down at the torch, I just let my mind wander back to the feelings and impressions of all the carved wood, dark colors, animal designs. This is what evolved. . . my own take on a tribal mask. The spiral decoration just felt right

Tribal Hunt Mask-- other side
I usually like to look up information, expand upon it, sketch ideas, etc. This time, I let myself just make it look the way I wanted , so I can't tell you anything about the significance of the stripes or the large eyebrows.

Dancing Gazelle Man
Another hybrid human/animal mask with a twist. Literally. It's twisted to give the feel of fluid, dancing movement.

Dancing Gazelle Man-- side
A triangular face, part human, part elegant and petite-faced gazelle. Horns twisted of stacked gray and ivory and red dots.

Dancing Gazelle Man-- twisted view
Actually, it's the bead that's twisted. Twisted just enough to make it assymetrical and fluid.

Dancing Gazelle Man-- back
A little more delicate feeling than the Tribal Hunt Mask, this Dancing Gazelle Mask just evokes a feeling of swiftness and elegant movement.

I tried a ruffled mane on another mask you didn't see. That didn't work. This time I tried snipping a halo of glass to make the mane.

I believe I'm in love with Moretti browns nowadays. The light brown has such pretty streaks in it, and the chestnut has a gorgeous reddish tone.

Zebra Woman Mask
Masks certainly seem inherently male, don't they? Just a product of the stereotypes that kept women from being priests in many religions for thousands of years, or simply a case of something having an inherently masculine feel? Who knows?

Zebra Woman Mask-- side
But this one, with the delicate layers of eye material framing the zebra texture body of the face, this is in femine!

Zebra Woman Mask-- back
Maybe it's the zebra stripes? Or, maybe, it's that pear shaped zebra body...

Of course, she also reminds me of one of the characters from Camp Lazlo on Cartoon Network, so who am I to speculate about her personality??

King
This is the third lion face I tried. He's very pared down, very simple in design.

I like his colors best of the three. Did I tell ya I'm really, really liking Moretti browns lately??

Did Groucho know Walt??
Hmm, this one broke the bead release before I could get the shape I wanted, but I kept playing anyway.

Did Groucho Know Walt?? Back view
Funny looking, I know, but just like most of my experiments, it led me to learn a new skill. Watch for more elaborate masks with lots of frilly extensions.

Thanks for stopping by to visit with AngelinaBeadalina! I'm really just plain ol' Angie or Ang, but the catchy name does suit me in the sense that I'm a motormouth who loves to play with words almost as much as I love to play with glass! You can find me here at BeadArtists.org, in my Etsy shop, or in my daily blog. You can get links to those places at www.angelinabeadalina.com (click on it above). Please pardon the use of my "official" website as a traffic control signal at the moment-- at least, that's what it makes me think of when I look at it. . . lots of directions to other places where there are updates on a daily basis. Tech-stuff would not be one of those things that I love or that comes naturally to me ;) Well, enough rambling for now, come on in, look around. . . have fun exploring my glass experiments and ideas. Peace, Ang
